Welcome to the website of the Dame Laura Knight Society

Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) is one of Britain’s most successful female artists of the 20th century.  She achieved great fame internationally during her lifetime. She exhibited in galleries all over the world. Her paintings of life in the theatre and the circus as well as for her landscapes and portraits have made her world famous.

Although from humble beginnings, she was the first woman to be elected a Royal Academician in 1936 and as an official war artist she became a prominent recorder of events in the Second World War.

Our aim as a society is to promote awareness of the work of Laura and Harold Knight and celebrate their paintings, particularly work done in the Malverns, Worcestershire. It was here that they lived 1931-1961.

The Society was set up in 2008. Since then, much energy and commitment has gone into gathering information about the Knights. There is now an archive which has a unique collection of images, newspaper cuttings, articles and artefacts which is available to members by appointment.

Membership of the Society has grown steadily and it is thriving as its reputation in offering excellent speakers, visits to galleries, art themed holidays and many other events, reaches more people in the area. In addition to arranging talks and visits, the DLKS are working towards establishing Dame Laura Knight as a lasting legacy in Malvern’s heritage.

This website gives information about our events, our archive and details about how to become a member.

You can find more information about Laura Knight – her life and work – on the official website.

Members of the Society are available to give illustrated talks on Dame Laura Knight on request.
